The Simple Joys

Yesterday I had the most amazing gluten free muffin and as I was devouring it in a little g/f bakery in Seattle (mad props to The Flying Apron) I started thinking about how important the littlest things in life are. This muffin was amazing and, as I was telling Matt about the muffin experience, I realized just how special I felt having a baked good I could eat.

When my food allergies thing came up I felt like I lost out on a lot. I couldn’t eat any of my favorite foods, in trying to maintain my social life I had to watch my friends eat those foods, and if I accidentally ate something I am allergic to I felt like utter crap. But, now that I’m about a year into my allergy free diet, I am really savoring the feeling of not only eating a delicious and moist (so rare in g/f baking!) muffin that doesn’t make me feel like dying but also the enormous satisfaction of feeling normal. I was able to walk up to the counter, order my food without asking any questions, and eat my food with a peace of mind that’s rare for someone with multiple food allergies. This was huge for me.

Maybe I’m simple, and that’s ok,  but it’s the small things that make each day worth living; whether its a gluten-free maple nut muffin, or a sweet text message from Matt, or  a sweater with sequins cascading down the shoulders- it’s these fine details that break up the monotony of routine and make each day special. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized I can actually give myself this gift by not only buying awesome muffins and sweaters but by taking the time to notice the flowers, birds, sunrises and sunsets, embracing what is, and letting go of what isn’t.Kels 6Sweater & Tank:Target//Scarf:Fred Meyers//Jeggings:Express//Boots & Bag:Lucky Brand//Belt:Charlotte Russe

It’s the simple joys that make this season special, so please go around noticing them and help create the experience for someone else if possible. And by all means, eat delicious muffins while wearing sequins, I promise you won’t be let down.

Nighttime Blogging

Alright guys, today you’re getting a little insight into my mid-week, crazy, sleep-deprived brain. I’ve come to realize something very big-it’s amazingly difficult to take pictures of yourself at the end of a long day. Maybe I’m just lacking in mad skillz, but this is what I’ve got for you:I really love this outfit, though, which made this evening’s photoshoot all the more bittersweet. I am in love with this purple scarf, I adore these work pants, and sweaters are probably the best thing ever. But, unfortunately, these pictures do not do them (nor my hair) much justice. Tanks:Target//Sweater:TJ Maxx//Scarf:Fred Meyers//Pants:Express

Which is why sometimes you just have to roll with the punches, rock your new favorite scarf, and take some ridiculous pictures… like this last one…

…which completely sums up how I feel roughly 14% of the time. Happy Thursday everyone (it’s almost Friday!!!)!

My Bangin’ Decision

I hope you appreciate the terrible pun in my title…yeah. It’s late. These long days of studying on lunch breaks, sleeping only a handful of hours each night, and running like a crazy person (not kidding when I say crazy…I should have my own reality TV show because the amount of crazy things I say out loud is priceless) all over the place trying to make school and work jive cause me to make absolutely awful puns by mid to late week. But hey, it adds to my charm!

Annnnywaaaays, seeing as this post is not supposed to be about how tired I get by mid-week or how terrible my puns are, it’s time to reveal the verdict on the bangs decision from last week! Drumroll please! It’s full, straight bangs again!

While I was super excited about my decision while I was getting my hair cut, I think this may be the last style I go for with the straight bangs. I think I’m kinda ready for a change…of course I decided this two days after my haircut so it will be a while before you see any huge changes to my hair (because I know you were totally on the edge of your seat in anticipation and all). But, unless I somehow re-fall in love with straight bangs again-which very well might happen like it did this week (I blame Zooey Deschanel and how well she pulls off her bangs), I’m thinking the next haircut will probably go with team side bangs from my original bangs post last week.

Thank you so much for all your help deciding what I should do with me hair guys (even if I didn’t listen at all). It’s awesome getting outside input on these big, hairy situations…there I go again with the bad puns. And on that note, I think it’s time for me to peace out and attempt to hang on til Friday night. Happy almost weekend guys!

Pumpkin Carving Time

Last night was the night, folks, I finally got to cut into my pumpkin and give him the face he’s always wanted! Ok…I doubt any pumpkin would go for a slightly sad, Edward Cullen-esque basic vampire face, but it’s what my pumpkin got. And, to think, people wonder why I never pursued a career in plastic surgery.

The Before

The After

Since this was the third anual pumpkin party Kim and I threw, here’s a little retrospective of the pumpkin-awesomeness we’ve created over the years!

Year one…we forgot to take pictures together with our pumpkins sooo here’s what we pulled together for that year.

Side note, I voluneteered to be the sober on this year, I have no idea why I couldn’t keep my eyes open even if my life depended on it…

Year 2

We realized our mistake from the year before and took a million pictures together-this was my favorite!

Annnnd year three!

Shirt:A&E//Scarf:Gift//Jeans:Express

Why yes, if you had guessed that these were our pumpkin faces you would be 100% correct about how we managed to pull off such an awesome picture. Also, I’m pretty dang sure that holding an lit pumpkin was one of the ballsiest things I’ve done in a while…so much flamage…right there…next to my torso…FIRE!

I hope everyone has a safe and fun Halloween & a happy Sunday!

Never Say Never

Alright folks, a day has come that I NEVER thought would ever come; I’m going to blog about jeggings…not only that, I’m going to blog about how much I LOVE THEM (oh God, I love these pants more than my sweat pants). Yes, I was oh so hesitant to even try them on and I never in a million years thought I would own a pair-I suppose it’s true: never say never.

Despite the initial shame I felt for owning spandex pants (mainly because I gave Marci a hard time when she donned a pair a year or so ago) I have fully embraced all that is The Jegging. These pants are unbelievably comfortable, I can do yoga in them (yes, I tried), I can sit for hours, they make my butt look awesome, and they fit perfectly into boots. The one down side to this pair of magic pants, however, is it’s magnetic power attracting dog hair. Though I suppose doggies crashing my photo shoot doesn’t help.

Other than breaking in the jeggings, I’ve been soaking up the fall colors and lifestyle by chilling at the local Starbucks while attempting to make a dent in the pile of homework sitting in my backpack.

I have to say, I love fall weekend days. It’s so great throwing on a sweater, scarf, and boots and heading out to grab coffee. Life feels just a little slower…I love feeling like I have a chance to really catch my breath which with the crazy epicness that my life has become since starting school.

Anyone else enjoying these fall colors? I was originally going to do the shoot outside in a pile of leaves but there was a sudden downpour so I had to make a quick location change. What about loving jeggings?! Am I the only person who was surprised at how awesome these pants are or wish you could wear them everywhere, all the time?

Happy Sunday!

A Day in the Life

Oh boy, yesterday was quite the busy day (as are most days in the life of a full time worker and student, I’ve found) and in the chaos of everything I realized, I very rarely show you how many outfits I actually wear in a day. So I thought it might be fun to show what a day in my life looks like via the clothes I wear. Be prepared to see the good, the mediocre, and the not so pretty because I’m bringing it all. You’ve been warned.

Outfit #1: Work

Gotta get my Blue Steel on for this one! This is quite the usual Kels business casual look. I love wearing layers to work because perhaps all my coworkers are polar bears and I didn’t notice (admittedly unlikely because polar bears are SO CUTE, but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt) but our office is constantly freezing. I’ve been super excited to wear this sweater in particular but, for whatever reason, I couldn’t figure out how to wear it until this morning. I don’t know what clicked but suddenly it made so much sense to wear it to the office over this super comfy H&M shirt. Moment of business casual genius perhaps?

Sweater:Ross//Shirt:H&M//Pants:Gap//Shoes: Target

Despite the fact that I’ve been having a hard time figuring out how to wear green shoes (I mean seriously, there’s some magic that goes into wearing colorful shoes that I’m not 100% sure I possess…maybe I should talk Marci into giving me color lessons), I was digging the pop of color this morning with my otherwise rather 50 shades of gray outfit. (Now get your minds out of the gutter! This is me we’re talking about…and I was at the office…and it’s me…)

Outfit #2: School

Because I’ve been SUPER busy and stressed with all the epic life changes going on in the last couple months, I’ve really been making a point to wear clothes I adore to class which is why I was delighted to pull out the jellyfish sweatshirt this morning! This gem, which I’m pretty sure was part of my first blog post ever, usually results in a smile being instantly plastered on my face when it makes its way out of my closet so it was an obvious choice for my quick change after work before I headed out to classes.

Sweatshirt:Farmers Market//Jeans:Gap//Shoes:Target

I also love getting to wear jeans so I have started making sure I pack a pair for class in the mornings before I make my way to the office. Theres something about it that just changes my mind set into that of a studious student. Maybe it’s because I wore jeans almost everyday to classes for the last 5 years so there is a sense of familiarity but it just feels so right slipping into them.

Outfit #3: (Only Because I Like You) Blogging

And this, my friends, is how I looked while I typed up this very post. Oh yes, my face has been scrubbed (though I did take off the ring of mascara I usually ignore around my eyes, just for you), hair is in a messy bun, sweat pants on, and a tshirt from a school activity. Yes, I dress exceedingly relaxed when I’m at home (though, don’t most people?). There’s just something so wonderful and relaxing about throwing on the sweat pants and pulling back your hair at the end of a long day.

In case you were wondering…I ditched the green shoes for this look.

There you have it, a day in the life of Kels via the clothing on my back and the shoes (or lack there of) on my feet. And yes, you did just witness the posting baggy sweat pants on a fashion blog…that did just happen.

Feeling Oh So British

Here’s something that’s probably not a shocker: I love Kate Middleton’s styling (not to mention envy her wardrobe and continue to drool over her collection of fascinators). So imagine how excited I’ve been with my recent exploration into the realm of business casual as I’ve finally been forced to tap into her pulled together look and explore what makes an outfit look professional not only in a work setting but also in my “real life” (aka all the rest of the time I’m not at work or hanging out at home in sweats). And, what’s been most thrilling, I think I’m finally getting the hang of this fun, classy look!

As I was getting dressed this morning, I channeled my favorite princess and decided I just needed to tuck in my shirt…I’ve never been a shirt tucker iner (with pants anyways) so I was admittedly weirded out that my instinct told me to do so but as I shoved my shirt into my pants (so eloquent, I know) I realized it not only worked, but I liked it. I’m pretty sure this is what growing up feels like…though is it really growing up if you’re still dressing like your favorite princess…or if you’re wearing a sweater you got at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter?

Oh yes folks, this is a legit, Scottish made, wool, Gryffindor sweater just like the cast of Harry Potter wore in the movies. I’ve been beyond excited to finally wear this gem so I could show you how I planned to incorporate my favorite souvenir of my summer travels into my wardrobe (guess that’s what happens when you buy the coolest wool sweater ever in July of the sunniest year you’ve ever lived through…seriously it’s usually rainy and gray by labor day out here can’t the weather just let a girl wear her nerdy sweater?!).  As I got dressed and was feeling ever so British tucking my shirt in and taking a few queues from Kate (cough cough matching belt and boots), I decided it was time to up the British (and nerd) factor and throw on the ultimate British sweater. A gosh did it feel good…and warm…they’re not kidding around about how warm these wool sweaters are!

I’m really excited for my upcoming posts because it’s been really fun to stretch my fashion limits, try new things, and let my style evolve alongside the other changes I’ve been experiencing. With that, does anyone else feel especially British lately or love Duchess Kate’s style as much as I do? If so I’d love to hear about which styles you’ve been digging because I wanna drool over them right along side you!
