Stripes: Of Bangs and Hair

A day has come that I never ever, ever, ever thought would come: I have mastered the art of styling bangs.

Oh yes, I finally consistently pump out bangs that look like this in the morning. 9 year old me, with the goofy bangs going all directions, is so freaking proud. This was a long time coming, The first month or so of bangage was filled with weird gaps and flyaways. Luckily, after a bunch of experimentation, I’ve mastered the blow drying to hairspray quotient.

There are the bangs at the end of my work day. Seeeeeeee?! I think I’ve finally conquered the cowlicks.

I also thought you all might be proud of my accessorizing! I picked up this rose bracelet this last weekend at H&M and I think it’s my new favorite thing ever. I seriously want to wear this every single day ever but, alas, I’ve got to try rocking some other accessories too. I can’t be a one trick pony, now can I?

Stripes: I Must Admit…

…I’ve been a bit busy this week. I promise things are slowing down and I should be back to a regular posting schedule this week. I’ve been trying to stockpile some pictures and get a little ahead which, ironically, has left me a little behind this week but fear not! I’ll be back in full force this week.

Back to the reason you likely read our blog: I have this little gem my sister’s boyfriend took of me while we were doing her senior pictures this weekend!

Skirt:Macys//Sweatshirt:Farmers Market

I think I’ve finally hit the pinnacle of Hipster…long bags, a-line skirt, playing a uke in an ally while  the sun’s setting behind me while I look dramatically off to the yonder. Yep, I’m pretty sure I’m quickly becoming Zooey Deschanel Jr. I’m also completely in love with it and I am ready to fully embrace all that is this part of my personality (so you should totally expect to be seeing more of this kind of thing because now that I have a big girl paycheck I can afford some rad new duds).

I guess all I have to say, hipsterness aside, is “to new beginnings, sunsets, and not taking life too seriously”. Happy Sunday friends!

Stripes: Life Happens

Oh yes, sometimes life happens and it means one of us can’t blog. Usually, however, it’s only one of us who ends up a little distracted from the blog but this week turned out to be the perfect storm for both Sequins and myself to have to take a little blog hiatus. All I can say for my side of things (don’t wanna put any words in Miss Sequins’ mouth, though I have a strong feeling she would agree with the following statement) is “whoops”.

This last week has been filled with some really great things and some less than great (but still not bad, no need to worry) things as well as my body adapting to this new grown up sleep schedule. I haven’t been on a regular wake up/go to bed routine in the least since I was in high school and even then it was spotty at best (I was the queen of before dinner naps then staying up until all hours of the night getting my homework done…sounds a lot like college but I just had to be up at 6 am every day unlike college where I usually didn’t have classes that started earlier than 10 am-thank you Poli Sci Department). But this week I’ve been trying really hard to get up at the same time everyday and go to bed around the same time everyday. Ok, it’s not that hard because I’ve been so exhausted by the time I get home from work that three days this week I have fallen asleep on top of my blankets with my make-up (once I was even wearing my running clothes because I was just about to leave for a run…true story) but I’ve started waking up about 10 minutes before my alarms go off in the mornings which has been absolutely wonderful!

Since I’m 99% sure you don’t read our blog just to hear all about my sleep schedule, as exciting as it is, I have actually been wearing clothes, despite what this mini-blogging-blackout may otherwise suggest. I’ve come to realize that, in this business casual world I’m now navigating, I only wear two types of clothes Monday through Friday: work clothes (usually nerd chic…I promise there will be pictures soon!) and sleep clothes (because once I’m home I’m not leaving unless the house is on fire). But the weekends are a totally different story-I get to wear whatever I want. I can bust out the clothes that, just a month ago, I was bored with and breathe new life into them because it’s been forever since I last wore them. I’m excited to wear my skirts, boots, dresses, t-shirts, tennis shoes, and sweatshirts. It’s awesome! And this, my friends, is my Saturday look from this week!

Can I just say it’s REALLY HARD to get good shots of yourself using self-timer and the railing of your deck? Half the pictures are literally not focused on anything and 2/3 of the rest had me making funning faces or only my face was out of focus. So please excuse the relatively low number of outfit pictures I’m going to put out here until I get used to this new set up. Things did get fun, however, when I put the camera on the steps down from the deck…

Maggie wanted to be the star of my photoshoot (or, you know, she wanted me to throw her toy for her). She’s actually been especially unphotogenic today which is strange because I have thousands of pictures of her and she always looks great. Maybe she’s having an off day? Story time!! Earlier in the day I was snuggling/rolling around on the floor with her and I went to take a picture because it was a cute moment but right when I turned my camera on her she froze and looked like a deer in headlights.

Seeeeeee? Straight from the iPhone you have it. She kept making this face every time I pulled out my phone. And yes, that is me laughing. I also think it’s great that she’s concerned with the amount of cleavage I put out in the world (hence the strategically placed paw). Such a weird (yet considerate) doggie.

Happy long weekend folks! Be safe and have fun out there and I’ll be back with a post on Tuesday!

Stripes: So Yeah

Remember that time I told Sequins I would totally have her back and come up with some awesome posts to keep the blog running like a gem? Yeeeaaaahhhh. I may or may not have TOTALLY forgotten to take pictures of my outfit yesterday. Here is a list of why you didn’t get to see my geek chic outfit:

-I forgot I needed to write a post (because some how it’s really hard to remember I post every other day…)
-Sequins wasn’t here to remind me to take pictures
-I really had to pee when I got home last night so I first changed in my pjs so I could be as comfortable as humanly possible
-I’m kinda forgetful
-My dog ate it
-Aliens took over my brain and made me do some weird stuff
-I’m actually a bear and started hibernating
-My outfit burst into flames and I had to go on the Hunger Games
-I’m really a ghost and it’s really hard to get a picture of me
-My outfit was actually made out of candy and I ate it
-I’m a werewolf and as I got home tonight I started to change so I couldn’t take a picture of the process
-I was hungry and food>pictures
-My dog wanted me to rub her belly

Yeah, yeah, yeah, you get the point. I may or may not have totally forgotten that I needed pictures of my outfit, which is a shame because it was really cute! BUTTTTTT (what what in the butt? Anyone?) I’ve got a picture of me and the sweatshirt I was OMG SO EXCITED to change into. Not kidding. Sorry friend I had coffee with and those ducks at the park, but the highlight of my day was putting on this sweatshirt and then eating nachos.

See why this sweatshirt rocks?! My little college town has a heart over it!

This sweatshirt (from the farmer’s market by the lady who did our jellyfish sweatshirts) makes me smile!

And then I caught the wind from my fan…I’m getting all ANTM up in hurrrr. Making Tyra proud, one picture at a time.

What’s your guys’ favorite post work outfit? Anyone else crave nachos in a weird, kinda intense way? Oh God, don’t let me be the only person who would eat the cheesy deliciousness for every meal ever.

Stripes: A Saturday Well Spent

A Saturday well spent is a Saturday spent playing Lego Harry Potter while wearing a HP shirt and Sprectrespecs and then eating bacon. Oh yes. And you know who has two thumbs and a had a well spent Saturday? This blogger!

Plaid with the Quibbler I got her in Wizarding World of HP.

I think I pull of the pretty dang well…maybe I’m a little bit of a Lovegood?

Oh yes, there were some silly faces made while wearing the Spectrespecs…if only you could see what I was seeing.

And then there was kitty snuggle time.

And then there was kitty judge time. I’m pretty sure we deserved it, though, so we can’t blame her.

That was my Saturday. I hope everyone else is having a great weekend and enjoying one of the last weekends of summer…how is it almost September?! Seriously. Happy Sunday!

Stripes: A Little Arts and A Little Crafts

Hey guys, I’m sorry I’ve been slacking in the outfit pictures department; starting a new full time job that has me getting up at 5 am has been an interesting transition. I also dont have any friends at this new job that I can ask to take outfit pictures of me. I know, excuses excuses, but I am going to try to be better about capturing my outfits either before or after work next week. See how much I love you guys?! I’m willing to consider waking up a whole 15 (very precious) minutes early for you. This is true love my friends.

Until I muster the courage and self control to wake up that early, I have a crafty-crafty post for you! After moving home, I realized I needed some new decor; I tossed a lot of my decorations before moving home because I didn’t want to have to move more stuff and I wanted a chance to start fresh in this new stage of life. So, in the midst of my unemployment, I got busy with my acrylic paints and went crazy painting some decorations. The following is a how-to guide for making cute plaques as inspired by these canvasses.

Step One: Pick some plaques. I got mine at Michaels for $1-2 depending on the size. Super easy and there are a million shape options.

Step Two: Prime. I don’t think you really need to do this but some of the nots on the wood were pretty dark so I figured it probably wouldn’t hurt the final product. Though I was a little worried seeing the not so great job this spray paint did …hello drippy droppies. I’m pretty sure it was the can but it could have been operator error, too…

Step Three: The Base Coat. I did this in different colors on each board and I would totally recommend doing two coats, just in case.

Step Four: Arrange the letters on the board. I would also recommend waiting a couple hours just to be sure the paint is dry so you don’t pull it off with the letters at the end. (I forgot a picture of just the letters, but I used plastic letter stickers from the tshirt decorating section [I think…] at Michaels)

Step Five: Paint the top coat. I LOVE BLUE so I chose blue. I would totally sugest two or three coats just to be sure your colors are brillant.

Step Six: Peel off the letters. I used my tweezers and a lot of patience…not as much as I needed while laying the letters down though. Boy, did I go a little OCD in that step.

Step Seven: Optional: Use fine grain sandpaper to distress the project. I did it on the first one I did (the small one) but I wasn’t sure I liked it so I held off on the second one.

Voila! There you have a rediculously cheap and easy project that brightens any room and makes an awesome gift. No seriously, everyone I know is getting one of these for Christmas. EVERYONE! So don’t be surprised if all the Michaels store in the greater Seattle area are out of these plaques

Stripes: The Big Time

Alrighty folks, I have a big announcement- this last week I landed my first big girl job. We’re talking a vacation day providing, health insurance giving, 9-5 big girl job. This is the start of a new era in Stripes-land and to commemorate the moment, here is a picture of what I wore while signing the new-hire paperwork.

Luckily, Sequins and I had a coffee date shortly after I signed the papers so we were able to catch my outfit (and have a total photoshoot reunion complete with the emailing of pictures…oh the things we took for granted in months past!). It was really fun catching up and pretending we still live in the same small town (despite the EPIC traffic I hit while making my way over to the Seattle coffeeshop where we were meeting). I miss Sequins a ton and I’m really excited for her to move down closer to me (albeit 45-70 mins away depending on traffic).

I’m also excited to transition into a new, professional wardrobe-lots of new clothing combos and a chance to really redefine my relationship with fashion. I’ve felt myself really evolve since moving away from my college town/bubble but that’s is really it’s own post…

What’s everyone else’s workplace essentials?! I’m sooo new to this business casual everyday stuff and I’d love to hear what you love!

Stripes: The Cycle of Blogging

I have to admit, this morning when I walked pass the bathroom mirror on my way out the front door, I didn’t recognize myself. When did I become quasi-glamourous? The answer was this morning when I got dressed. I’ve been SUPER dressed down and pretty unfashionable since getting back from my trips because I haven’t seen much of a reason to throw on a sundress if all I’m going to do is putz around the house all day reading/journaling/watching youtube/writing a fashion blog…yeah, that’s right, I write a fashion blog.

This realization that I do, indeed, write a fashion blog lit a fire under my butt to get out of my sweats and tshirts (which I’ve been wearing almost everyday aside from when I’m doing job hunty things) because I was quickly running out of pictures and stories for the blog (seriously, there is not much going on in Stripes Land right now, ooooo boy). So I did.

And somehow, throwing on clothes (and make up…I need to do a make up post stat btws because I bought a bunch of new stuff [I know, way to rock not having a job] and it has changed my life) has helped me to actually do stuff with my day. Like, productive, life enriching things that I can blog about in the future.

So you see, blogging is really just an epic cycle. You need motivation to do something for the blog so you put on your cute outfit and then you have something to show everyone/can write a great post (because this post is clearly literary genius). The cute outfit makes you want to get out of the house and do things so you go to the craft store and buy all the missing components for the 47241 unfinished crafts you’ve been waiting to do. And then, when the crafts are done, you can blog about those too! Full circle moment, my friends.

What kinds of crafts is everyone else up to these day? I’d love to hear about it in the comments because, until I’m employed, I foresee a lot of crafting in my future.

Stripes: Wilderness Time

Maybe it’s the overabundance of evergreen trees or maybe it’s the epic number of giant hills we have out here, but the NW is prime hiking territory and this is the story of that one time I went hiking in the Summer of 2012.

The trip started off beautifully; the sun was shining, the air crisp with a hint of dust, the trees green as ever. So we took off heading up this epic hill.

We climbed and climbed (this was a very big hill) until we were about a quarter of the way up because it was time for a water break. While sitting on a boulder, I decided to be vain and take some pictures of myself (I mean really, what else are you supposed to do in the woods? Reflect on life? Ponder the deep wonders of the universe? Look for birds? IDK) so this happened.

And then this happened.

Then I looked down and realized there was blood dripping down my ankle. Eeeek! I had a wound! So I rubbed some dirt on it and got over it (actually the dirt was there already…I just got rid of the residual blood and took a shower as soon as I was home to make sure it was clean and prevent gangrene and other things that the woods seem like they can cause). As you can see, this was a doozy of a hiking wound.

Then began the ascend once more. We climbed and climbed until the half way point when we stopped for water again. I chugged with everyone else instead of taking a million more pictures of myself but when it came time to decide whether we would go forth to the top or head home, we took a group poll  and ended up heading home. The hill had won. So with a sense of defeat, we turned around and marched our way back to the car.

Yeah, sorry this story doesn’t have an epic ending and I’m not even all that sure why it made it’s way to the blog but I do have a somewhat epic picture of the trail for you!

Happy Trails Folks!

Stripes: Of Wining and DIning and Adventures pt. 2

Hey-o it’s time for part 2 of this NY adventure!

Day 3: I was super excited to meet up with an old high school friend and walk down to the financial district. Later that day I crashed hard. I think all the excitement finally hit me and I took one epic nap…no pictures of that part of the trip. I know, you guys are all SUPER bummed you don’t get to see my little hot mess self napping away my vacation. That evening, after all napping had taken place, we had dinner at a really good South American restaurant in Brooklyn and grabbed drinks at a cute little hipster bar where I had a drink made with artichoke…I was beyond excited when they showed me the bottle with a majestic artichoke beaming out at me.

Day 4: This was my last real day in the city so I decided to add some culture to my trip and visit the Natural History Museum. I took about a million pictures of the animal and dinosaur models and I laughed (out loud even) when I found some alpaca artifacts in the South American area. That night Mr. New York and I decided to go out with a low key bang (is that even a thing? I think I just made it a thing…it will catch on) so we went to a gluten free Italian restaurant by Central Park drank wine like actual grown ups (without realizing it even!!! bonus points for us!) and topped that off with some blueberry lemonade at a really cool lookout where we could watch the sunset (over Jersey, luckily we were guido free) annnnnd I got to see my very first lightning bug EVER. That may have been a serious highlight of the trip-all my friends on the West Coast get me. We’ve heard about them since we are little and dream of chasing them but where are they? Not anywhere near us. So my childhood was made as we found a little patch of the glowy bugs!

And there you have New York via my phone and stories! I only have 2 more vacation posts, no worries, and one is an outfit post from Disneyworld, getting my theme park on!
