Stripes: I Hate to Admit It, But I’m Not Superwoman

Ahh the last 5 years have been intense. I’ve learned how to multitask, keep lists, and rock projects for both work and school. How to prioritize. How to push my limits and do more things than I ever thought possible. I’ve also learned that sometimes I can’t do it all.

I was initially excited to blog about this outfit because it was the first themed Friday we had in my department and we did Fancy Friday. How fun is that? (the answer, jsyk, is way fun). But see that face? That’s an exhausted face after fighting an hour of traffic to make it home from the office after a full day at work. I’m exhausted. And I haven’t even started my paralegal program (which starts this week making me both a full-time worker and full-time student).

Seeing this photoshoot was the last straw for me (and you’re getting the least tired looking pictures in the bunch). All the photos showed just how tired I am: bags under my eyes and no color in my face despite the blush I layer on in the mornings and, suddenly, I realized I don’t think I can do it all. Especially once I add school in to the mix.

So I’m sad to say, starting this week, I am only going to be able to post twice a week until next summer once I’m back to only having one full time occupation. I’m so sorry. This is not a decision I am taking lightly, but I don’t want to post just to post nor do I believe the quality of my writing will be up to my usual level if I’m falling asleep while typing.

Despite the fact that I feel like I’m letting people down by doing this, I realize in order to not fully burn out, I need to take care of myself and my commitments. This is not easy for me to admit (what you’re not reading are the two paragraphs of excuses and attempts for me to legitimize this decision which were way more for me to help comfort my type-A mind than to help you understand me), but I want to produce quality posts for this blog and I’ve learned enough about my sleep deprived brain in the last 5 years it’s not going to happen if I’m posting 3-4 times a week while holding two full-time occupations.

Again, I do, fully, plan to come back to posting every other day once I’m done with the craziness that is going to be the next 9 months but until than, I’m going to have to accept that I’m not Superwoman and sometimes I just need to accept that I need rest in order to function (crazy, right? Who’da thunk?).

And on this note (kind of), any advice from people who have worked full time and gone to night school? Any tips about how to stay awake when you’re only getting 6ish hours of sleep every night? Any suggestions of how to not go absolutely crazy while juggling a lot? I’d LOVE (ok, let’s be real, I’d freaking love) to hear all about it in the comments!

Channeling My Inner Marci

Happy Monday! These last couple of weeks have been crazy in Kels-land and are only set to get busier as my paralegal classes start in a week. To burn off some steam what have I been doing? Taking some fashion risks on the weekends!

Oh yes, what you can’t really see in these pictures is that I did, indeed, pulling a page directly from the Marci book of everyday fashion , layer tights! Heck yes!

I also got to bust out this scarf- a gift that fly all the way from Thailand just to be worn around my neck. Oh yes, This scarf was pretty much begging to be worn with my new, ballsy layered tights look and I have to say, it wasn’t hard to say “yes, scarf, you would make the perfect addition to this outfit.” (And, yes, I do totally have conversations with my clothes…that’s normal, right?)

I leave you with my most Marci pose. Have a great Monday, and let us know what you think of the new layout and “about me” sections in the comments! We’d love to hear your feedback!

Stripes: A Little Brady

Can I just take a second to say how awesome big girl paydays are? For Reals, folks, this first paycheck of mine went almost completely a little towards some new wardrobe pieces that I’m really excited for…especially this Brady-licious shirt.

Oh yes, I took it there. I’m going all groovy on you, folks, and bringing out my inner Florence Henderson with this new shirt. I got a little excited at H&M and found out they have a shirt (that comes in about 10 different colors and patterns) that is cut perfect for my body…and only costs $20. Yeah, I had to get on that bandwagon. Luckily, I’ve been working on having more self-control so I was able to walk out with just one shirt, not the 15 I wanted (the pair of snazzy new jeans I shelled out for definitely didn’t hurt my self-control either).

Oh moderation, how very Brady Bunch of me. I’ve realized, however, the older I get, the more I am like the Bradys-is that weird? Eh, I enjoy it and they *do* have some pretty out of sight wardrobes so I don’t think I’d have it any other way.

Stripes: The Cycle of Blogging

I have to admit, this morning when I walked pass the bathroom mirror on my way out the front door, I didn’t recognize myself. When did I become quasi-glamourous? The answer was this morning when I got dressed. I’ve been SUPER dressed down and pretty unfashionable since getting back from my trips because I haven’t seen much of a reason to throw on a sundress if all I’m going to do is putz around the house all day reading/journaling/watching youtube/writing a fashion blog…yeah, that’s right, I write a fashion blog.

This realization that I do, indeed, write a fashion blog lit a fire under my butt to get out of my sweats and tshirts (which I’ve been wearing almost everyday aside from when I’m doing job hunty things) because I was quickly running out of pictures and stories for the blog (seriously, there is not much going on in Stripes Land right now, ooooo boy). So I did.

And somehow, throwing on clothes (and make up…I need to do a make up post stat btws because I bought a bunch of new stuff [I know, way to rock not having a job] and it has changed my life) has helped me to actually do stuff with my day. Like, productive, life enriching things that I can blog about in the future.

So you see, blogging is really just an epic cycle. You need motivation to do something for the blog so you put on your cute outfit and then you have something to show everyone/can write a great post (because this post is clearly literary genius). The cute outfit makes you want to get out of the house and do things so you go to the craft store and buy all the missing components for the 47241 unfinished crafts you’ve been waiting to do. And then, when the crafts are done, you can blog about those too! Full circle moment, my friends.

What kinds of crafts is everyone else up to these day? I’d love to hear about it in the comments because, until I’m employed, I foresee a lot of crafting in my future.

Stripes: 1 Bag, 13 Days…Can it Be Done?!

The answer is yes, yes it can. Way back when we started the 30 for 30 we had joked that it was a way to gear up for my impending travels because I knew I was going on some epic trips this summer and was only planning to bring my backpack and a purse which would require a level of packing discipline that I have never before exhibited. I knew this challenge would be worthwhile and really fun to blog about, so I embraced it with open arms and started making plans to travel more efficiently than I’d ever traveled before. Luckily, the weather really helped me out. I knew to pack for really freaking warm which meant lots of thin clothing, minimal coat-age, and relatively few accessories.

The only “tools” I used to pack was a Space Bag (yes, like on the infomercials), some ziplock baggies, my trusty backpack, and the purse I’d been dreaming of. And with all this I was able to bring all THIS as carry on.

My final clothing count:
Tank Tops: 9 colored, 6 white (for layering)
T-Shirts: 6 (two for sleeping)
Dresses: 5
Pants:0!! I’m still very much so rebelling against pants.
Shorts: 2 pairs
PJ Shorts: 2 pairs
Leggings: 1 (just in case it gets cold)
Sweaters: 1
Coats: One blazer, One raincoat (Florida is known to have some wild weather…better to be safe than sorry), One Sweatshirt
Shoes: Three Pairs- Toms, flip flops and the sandals I am wearing on the plane
Swimsuits: 3 tops, 2 bottoms (If anyone knows of a great place to buy bottoms that actually fit girls with a little junk in their truck, please tell me in the comments section!)

Final Accessory Count:
Jewelry: One Necklace, One Ring, One Pair of Earrings, One Bracelet
Belts: 2-one thick one thin
Sunnies: One Pair

Extras in Backpack:

One quart sized bag of liquid stuff (shampoo, conditioner, lotion, ect)
A wash cloth- cause it sucks to get stuck without one
A Brush & Hair ties
Hair clips and pins
Empty Brita WaterBottle
Full Sized Hairdryer…you heard me right!

What’s in that Purse?
Make-Up & Brushes- the one thing I totally ran out of space for in my back pack
Stripes-Friendly Granola Bars
My Book-Portrait of a Lady
My Journal & Pen-cause I often have a lot to say (crazy, huh?)
My Lapop
Cords for laptop, iPhone, and earbuds
Gum
Wallet & Cellphone

What you’ve all been waiting for, The Packing Process:

I started with this preliminary clothing pull…”what’s missing from this picture?” you may be asking. The answer was underwear, tank tops, and shorts. All very important when traveling somewhere warm and in all seriousness, I almost forgot to pack underwear! That would have been a disaster and a half!

The prelim packing pull from my closet.

The next step was to actually pull everything out, pull out a few things I didn’t actually need to bring (pretty much just a couple t-shirts), and make sure I had the essentials-yep this is when I added the underwear to my packing pile.

Then I counted and took a bunch of pictures of everything I packed just for the blog. This took a little longer than I’d wanted but now I know I’m traveling with 15 tank tops, one bar of soap, and no pants.

Then I moved all the clothes, except underwear, swimsuits, and accessories, into the space bag. It looked like this before the air was pushed out:

And let me tell ya, rolling the bag was not nearly as glamourous as the infomercial leads you to believe. I created my own process and system to get the air out (much like rolling a sleeping bag while trying to not pop a plastic bag) and was able to get it in my backpack without any trouble.

Then I had all of this stuff to stuff in the bag. No problem, though, there was a ton of space and this backpack has a lot of space in the side pockets.

The only thing I ran out of space for was my make up but there was plenty of space in my purse. So I threw everything in the purse, was surprised to still be able to zip it up, and called my packing adventure done!

Sorry, it’s a little on the blurry side, we were a little rushed trying to get out the door, but it gets the point across-I was able to fit a crap ton of stuff in a backpack and purse while still looking fabulous!

So there you have my most epic packing adventure! Holy cow, I was a little worried going into it, but I know I have enough clothing for the whole trip, I have plenty of options (the constant fear of us over-packing types), and I can comfortably carry all my stuff on my own. If you have any questions about how I did it, or any suggestions of how to make a little extra space for the return trip (admittedly, there isn’t much space for my mouse ears or any clothing I might pick up in NY) I would LOVE to hear about it in the comments!

Stripes: A Small Hometown Layover

I have a little something to tell you, dearest blog readers (but I’m sorry if I’m sounding like a broken record because I can’t remember if I already mentioned my news because it’s been in the works for quite some time): this is my summer of epic vacationing. And as I am finishing this post, I am sitting in the airport waiting to take off to New York City!

The last few years I’ve barely left my little college town for more than a night or two-aside from my summer on an alpaca ranch in Idaho 4 summers ago which did, admittedly, help me to explore all sorts of cool places as I had many car adventures in those days before I had a smartphone or GPS (*cough cough* getting so lost I ended up 80 miles into Montana….)-but since I was leaving my town for good, I decided to do things the Stripes way, and do it all the way. So this has, somewhat unintentionally and mostly by great luck and generosity, become my summer of jet-setting.

This is my favorite picture from my alpaca days. His name is Boss and he was such a little flirt! He has nothing to do with this summer’s travels [unfortunately] but he is quite the eye candy nonetheless.

I meant to write you all a post about it before Portland (stop number one) but, because of some stuff going on in my non-blogy personal life, I’ve been a little spacey. But, better late than never, right? So over the next 2 weeks I’m going to be having a blast over the East Coast living one exciting little life! My first stop is NYC then I’m off to Florida for some epic theme park hopping (oh yes, there will be some Micky Mouse ears and a Magic Wand from Ollivanders) and getting my burn tan on!

I’m going to try my hardest to keep up on the blog, but I can’t promise I won’t miss a day or two…traveling is exhausting business! What I can promise you is a post about how I’m pulling off 13 days of travel with just one carry-on bag and my purse (mainly because I am going to finish it and schedule it while I wait for my flight…but let me tell you, it was kinda epic how much stuff I was able to fit in my bag). And yes, you heard me right-a fashion blogger making it almost two weeks on one bag’s worth of clothing. Packing has been a real process and I fully plan to explain (and show via tons of pictures) how I made it work because I’m not going to lie, I am pretty darn proud of myself.

And of course, a cute picture of me leaving my house for my grand adventures!

Dress:H&M//Blazer:Charlotte Russe//Purse:Sorial via TJ Maxx//Backpack:Kelty//Sandals:Mi Shoes//Sunnies:Ray Ban

I can also promise you a bunch of pictures from the East-partly because I love you all and wanna show you the cool stuff I’m going to see, but also because my mom made me swear I’m going to take a million pictures so there will a zillion pictures for me to show you all what I’ve been up to! Also, I’m going to try my hardest to get a few outfit photo shoots in because I’ve been hoarding some cool new stuff for this trip and am planning to up my fashionability factor (while in NY any ways…I make no promises for how cute I will look in Orlando-that leg of the trip will mainly be denim shorts, bikinis, and a complete lack of make-up).

Anyways, I’m off to have some adventures and make some memories!

Sequins: Twinsies!

So Stripes and I are friends, if you haven’t already picked up on this. Pretty good friends, actually. Almost a year ago (right before the birth of the blog) we had a really lifetime-tv-perfect conversation about being BFFs. We’re precious. As the time grew closer towards our inevitable moving, and leaving each other, we discussed jewelry. Some cute token signifying our BFF level. We even found a couple, too, but never pulled the trigger on any. Until we went shopping in Seattle that weekend, that is…

Dress & Bag: H&M/ Scarf: WWU Campus Store/ Sweater: Target/ Shoes: Hiltons

Look familiar? Stripes and I have coveted items in the others’ closet multiple times, and we always agree that it’s kind of weird to have the same thing. But when I tried this one, it was perfect. Not exactly like Stripes’, and super cute. And that’s how we decided these dresses are the perfect (albeit dorky) BFF symbols we’d been looking for.

And in case you couldn’t guess from my strange faces already, this was a strange photoshoot. So I leave you with my face, fully expressing how it feels to have your two best friends (Stripes AND Plaid) leave you and your tiny pond for bigger ones.
