The Power of Unicorns

I don’t take Facebook seriously, and on my personal page my about me goes like this-

If you’re bright pink and covered in glitter, there is a 98.45% chance that I’ll love you forever. The odds increase if you are also a unicorn.

It’s been a bit for a while now, but I have to say it’s true. If you’re a unicorn, there is a high probability that I will love you. So when David checked the mail and found this package waiting for me from the weekend, he won massive points.

It’s kind of hard to tell, I know but it’s a unicorn necklace he found online. That guy spoils me and I like it. Also, I didn’t realize this until after we did the photos, but it was super windy and I have a unicorn horn in every photo. I must be channeling their power!

Sweater & Shirt: H&M | Necklace: Gift | Shorts Tights & Shoes: Target

I have to say I’m really in love with this shirt from H&M (sale section, $5, yes please) but what really sealed the deal was how it perfectly frames the unicorn in the shirt pattern. I mean, it just doesn’t get much better than that!

Three years ago today

This isn’t really going to be an outfit post, you guys. Sorry. But there are some snazzy outfits in it! The thing is, three years ago* I met an amazing guy. His name is David, although up until recently you’ve known him as Monsieur. And he’s a guy who’s kind of worthy of a blog post. We’re celebrating our two year anniversary today*, and while it isn’t the most elaborate celebration you’ll ever hear of, it’s still a special one.

“Sometimes you have to fall apart before you can fall back together.”

When I first saw that quote on Pinterest, I  rolled my eyes pretty hard. I’m the type of girl who thinks “Jeez, enough is enough. You break up, you move on”. So when David and I broke in October 2010, I figured it was over. Which sucked, but I knew we’d live. We’d heal, and we’d be friends .

Clearly it’s not the case, and it took us slightly less than a year to figure that out. When we got back together we made a strong commitment to each other. We knew that if we decided to give it another shot, we knew we needed to be in it for all of the cards.

The past year has been a rough one for non-romantic reasons, and I’m just really glad that David has been there for its entirety. He makes me laugh when I’m grumpy, he’s calm when I’m spiraling into crazy land, and he’s patient. Dear god is he patient. And he’s all mine!

These photos are from the last of the three weddings. My dress is F21 and his suit is a rental.

*Well, technically, yesterday, but we celebrate it on the 20th so who knows when…

Sequins: Date Night Magic

Monsieur and I have, in separate instances, both received some (rather flattering) comments about how well we sustain our relationship. It makes me giggle, since we both feel like we have so much to work on when it comes to being together, but who are we to judge? The comments we’ve gotten lately that made me laugh came from my sister, who was admiring how well we date each other. I literally laughed out loud because date night is single-handedly what we fight about the most.

That being said, since we fight out about our lack of date nights so much, it becomes the thing we know we need to work on the most. We’ve only been living together officially for a couple months, but we’ve always been homebodies, and preferred to spend our time being lazy in the living room instead of courting each other*. Now that we live together, we have at-home dates almost every single evening, and it’s become clear that now, more than ever, getting outside is important for our health. And our relationship’s health.

Case in point, a couple nights ago we went out on a really fun date. We planned to walk about a couple miles through this beautiful beach-front park to a great Mexican restaurant and a paint-your-own-pottery place. It was going to be fun and exciting and I was looking forward to it. Monsieur ended up having a bad day, though, so we called it good with sharing headphones to listen to the new Rush album as we headed to dinner, and then had a nice time at dinner. I ended up laying out, in excruciating detail, the first two seasons of Buffy. We walked home and talked about it some more, and got eaten alive by mosquitoes.

It was worth it, though, and we went back the next day to paint pottery. I’ll share photos when they’re both finished. I’m a slowpoke control freak when it comes to painting pottery, so I didn’t finish the first trip out. Or the second trip out. I imagine, though, that I’ll be good after the third trip to coat it with paint! I’m excited to share, though, because Monsieur’s is pretty adorable. Adorable = I’m going to steal it from him.

*Because I’m old fashioned, I think courting is important. Because I’m not sexist, I think it needs to occur from both partners.

Sequins: I’m Still Grateful

I think those days where you’re feeling anything but grateful are the best days to work on active gratitude. This has been a doozy of a week, let me tell you. In addition to the things I was (vague and)unexcited about, I ended up taking a tumble on my steps. Remember this mug? It took the tumble with me, and now I have eleven stitches in my arm. Ouch.

So on to gratitude! I’m grateful for…

…Health insurance. I’m lucky enough that my work is able to over me some pretty awesome coverage, and I definitely get that not everyone has that. Although it shouldn’t be a privilege, health coverage should be a right. Ahem.

…My partner in crime. He’s been amazingly patient with me and the situations we’ve been in this week. He’s one of the few people I’d ever want to be stuck with for four hours in an ER.

…My mom, who will always let me whine about how clumsy I am, and send me off with a reminder to just be really nice to myself. She grants permission to eat cookies pretty much whenever the permission is needed (like now)

…Cookies. Or, more specifically, chocolate cake. I definitely picked up a couple slices for Monsieur and I from my favorite little local bakery.

…Twin Peaks (and, more broadly, Netflix). I didn’t realize how much Monsieur would like the show, so I had been watching it by myself. He watched a couple episodes with me and now he’s hooked! He’s actually just waiting impatiently for me to finish this post so we can get back to watching it! The owls are not what they seem…

…I know it’s like I’m sneaking the same answer in twice, but I’m going to include Monsieur’s willingness to do photos with me. It’s fun, it’s silly, and he’s never made me feel embarrassed at all about asking him to take photos of my outfits. He’s even getting to the point where it’s fun for him, I think, and he likes helping me pick out outfits!

The top you’re about to see, by the way, is obscenely comfortable and soft. This outfit proof that I do occasionally have lazy, dressed-down days. I slept in this shirt Friday night, and I only threw on the headband and earrings five seconds before walking downstairs for photos. That doesn’t happen too often, but today it does.

I hope everyone else out there is having a relaxing and safe weekend with beautiful weather! I’m going to go work on a sewing project for a friend while watching Twin Peaks. Only a few more episodes left! No one spoil it for me! 😉

Sequins: A Realy Good Morning

This doesn’t have a whole lot anything at all to do with my outfit, but it’s what I’m thinking about.

This morning was pretty awesome.

Nothing huge happened–no life changing decisions or amazing elaborate plans. Monsieur and I didn’t even have our usual hour to read and sip coffee together, which we usually try to fit in. It was a little rushed, and we spent most of the morning in separate rooms getting ready. But it was one of the best mornings because we talked the whole time.

We were silly and we sang harmonies to a couple of songs that have been stuck in our heads lately. He’s been learning a couple Bowie songs on the guitar, and he’s been listening to the Space Oddity album a bunch lately. Which means we’ve both been singing the Space Oddity song non-stop. This morning we kept singing it to each other as we putzed around in different rooms getting ready.

Then we switched over to Hooked On A Feeling and all heck broke loose. Do you guys remember that song? It’s impossible to not act super silly singing that song. We used to get in his 1984 Subaru and blast it on his pitiful speakers, banging on the sides of his car whenever it’d get to that drum beat. Good times, ya’ll.

This morning we pretty much pretended we didn’t live on the top floor of our apartment building and stomped our feet and sang at the top of our lungs and reminisced about the silly college years.

And then he packed my lunch for me and drove me to work since he was already heading out. Such a fella, I tell ya’.

Sequins 30 for 30 The Morning Off

Okay so it isn’t until I’ve written this entire post that I realized… I never posted anything yesterday! Woops! You’d think someone would remind me at some point… It’s because yesterday was a crazy busy 12-hour work day. Which is very different from the 12-hour school days I remember, where random hour breaks could be scattered. No, it was a hectic, exhausting, running-around-filled day where I had exactly one hour off between 8:00 AM and 9:00 PM.

I remember coming home in a total spacy blur and mumbling to Monsieur as I walked past him and towards the fridge. He was trailing behind, making some kind of ball-park-range-appropriate responses to whatever exhausted spew was coming out of my mouth. I grabbed a bottle of wine, turned to grab a glass and he was standing right there.

With an empty clean glass.

God that man is a good find.

But anyway….I survived! Better believe I’m celebrating Friday–the Friday where I’ve successfully SURVIVED the twelve hour day of Thursday.

Friday is a half day, full of sleeping in and coercing Monsieur into cooking breakfast* for me. There was video game playing (I’ve now made it to the third Spyro, and I’m as addicted as ever), as well as art projects. Lots of art projects. As in, I’m making no promises, but I already have over 60 articles of clothing (not counting my 30 for 30 picks) sketched out.

Oh, and there might have been a hair cut yesterday…. Like I said, I had exactly one hour. Turns out hair cuts only take up like 45 minutes! This was the kind where lots of hairs were cut. And they were cut quite a bit. Are you ready for this?

Holy crapballs, yo’! It feels so good I can’t hardly stand it! I am going to pop back in (hopefully today) to have them take a bit more off the sides and back, but yeah. Having this hairstyle back feels amazing, and will be perfect for summer! And yes, it’s definitely a mohawk. My compromise with working in an office is styling it down during work, but oh yeah. There’s almost nothing on the sides or in the back. I love love love it!

Also, though, it’s definitely time to get back into the habit of wearing eyeliner, since I’ve found that’s one of the best ways to keep feeling feminine when you chop all your locks off. It probably wouldn’t hurt to add make up in general back into my regiment (you guys must have noticed how very rarely I wear it. I’m definitely not wearing any in these photos!).

Anyway this post isn’t too long. Most of my long, lazy morning off has been coordinating with our landlord to get our cold water pipe fixed. Since it’s leaking enough to flood the bathroom in under ten minutes.

Yeah… Not fun times! Fortunately we have gym memberships, so we can shower there. Oh yeah, my life is so glamorous sometimes.

*Cooking breakfast turned into “buying me bananas and then driving to our favorite donut shop for breakfast. He did make lunch, though, and lunch was full of breakfast foods, so I’ll count it as a win!
